Artist Biography

François-Nicolas Martinet (1731-1804) was a French engineer, engraver, and illustrator best known for his detailed and elegant engravings of birds. Originally trained as an engineer for the French Court, Martinet turned his skills to naturalist illustration, becoming one of the most prolific ornithological illustrators of the 18th century. He is most recognised for his contributions to Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon's 'Histoire Naturelle', published in the late 1700s. Martinet created over 1,000 hand-coloured engravings for the series. His work played a crucial role in documenting natural history during the Enlightenment. Martinet also produced engravings of insects, architecture, and various scientific instruments. Some of his plates have been of importance in the taxonomy and identification of now extinct species.
