A dramatic oil painting by the well-listed artist Francis E. Jamieson, depicting an impressive mountain landscape with tall peaks and tranquil valley river. Pictured to the left-hand side of the scene is a small group of Scottish black-faced sheep, grazing under a single Scots pine. The painting is signed with pseudonym, G. McGregor, to the lower right. On canvas on stretchers.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age, including some discolouration caused by a build-up of surface dirt and nicotine. A small patch repair has been made to the reverse of the canvas, noticeable in the top right-hand quadrant of the painting.

Artist Biography

Francis E. Jamieson (1895-1950) was commonly known for his Scottish landscapes and loch scenes. Jamieson lived on the south coast of England and was contracted to a large department store to supply them with his paintings. The artist often signed with pseudonyms such as 'Phil Hips', 'Graham Williams', 'W. Richards' and 'Arnold Pienne', in order to reach a wider audience, whilst also selling his work ‘door to door’. Jamieson’s work was often in a traditional Victorian style and his pictures were reproduced as postcards by Ajelli and Co of London in the 1920s.
