This miniature engraving depicts a weeping angel at the gravestone of James Cook, known as Captain Cook who was killed in Hawaii in 1778. In the background the Captain's ship sails into the distance. Signed and dated. Presented in a round dark wooden frame. On wove.

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. There is some minor foxing to the paper.

Artist Biography

Francesco Bartolozzi (1927-1815) was an Italian painter and engraver. He was one of the founding members of the Royal Academy and served the King for forty years. He also engraved works by his fellow RA members, including Joshua Reynolds and Angela Kauffman. Bartolozzi is best known for being a lead developer in the invention of the 'stipple' engraving technique.
