Description
This characterful genre scene depicts a woman sitting opposite an older man – perhaps a solicitor – pointing towards a document laid on the table between them. A torn sheet of paper on the floor and the quill poised in the man's hand suggest she has successfully convinced him to rewrite the document, which the ring on her finger suggests may be a will. Meanwhile, an eavesdropper peeks from behind a curtain. Well presented in an ornate gilt-effect frame. Unsigned. On canvas on stretchers.Condition
The condition is typical for a picture of this age, including some discolouration and craquelure. There are some abrasions and paint loss to the surface, most notably to the upper left corner and along the lower edge. Inspection under UV light reveals no restoration. Minor wear and scuffs to the frame.
