A very fine late 19th Century oil on panel, depicting an ox-drawn cart on a lane, with farmers herding their sheep. The artist has chosen a shaded setting, in a wooden area, evoking the calm bucolic nature of farming in the bygone era of agricultural England. The careful approach to texture and light is evident, and shadow has been used to create a sense of subtle mystery. Handsomely presented in a substantial gilt wooden frame, with foliate mouldings, acanthus running pattern and egg-and-dart beading. Unsigned. On panel.
Condition
In very good condition overall, for a picture of this age. There is some minor surface discolouration and marks, as well as scuffing and surface marks to the frame. There are some small areas of restoration to the corners of the frame.
