This finely detailed mid to late 19th Century oil depicts a fresh-faced young woman in the Baroque style, with a Classical setting. The artist portrays the woman smelling a single rose, while balancing a large floral basket on her head, within which is nestled a winged cupid or 'putti', holding an arrow. The Classical setting is typical for the 18th Century French Baroque manner, with a large stone urn on a plinth, and an avenue of trees. The setting sun in the distance suggests a late summer evening, casting the whole composition in glowing tones.
With highly notable skill in the medium, the artist retains the fervour of the Baroque period, using warm tones with a focus on primary colours and movement. The roses and putti may symbolise Aphrodite, goddess of love and beauty. It is possible this work is after an original 18th Century painting.
Well-presented in a gilt wooden frame with running foliate moulding. There is a green label to the reverse reading 'Sotheby & Co'. This work may have originally been framed in an oval mount.
Unsigned. On panel.In very good condition for a picture of this age. Inspection under UV light reveals no restoration. There are some light cracks to the surface, two near the upper edge and two small losses to the very left edge, however these are all stable. The frame is in very good condition, with light wear to the corners and also some stable cracking, as expected.
