Description

This wool embroidery, known as a 'woolie', was created by a British sailor in the late 19th century. These works were traditionally made by sailors during long periods at sea as a pastime and souvenir of their naval service. Appreciated by collectors today for their maritime and folk art characteristics, this symbolic and patriotic woolie has been beautifully housed in a glazed, veneer maple frame. On linen.

Condition

Signs of wear consistent with age. Visible sun damage and discolouration to the textile. Small holes to the perimeter of the embroidery. Light dirtying and debris caught behind the frame's glazing. Small losses/humidity damage to the maple veneer.
