Framed French School Mid 19th Century Oil - Serious Stare
Description
A particularly fine and notable oil portrait of a French gentlemen painted around the mid 19th century, if not earlier. The sitter is pictured wearing a smart three piece suit, paired with a maroon coloured shirt. Hanging from the gentleman's waistcoat is his tortoiseshell monocle. Note how the artist has paid particular attention to the sitter's facial features and piercing eyes, with a masterful understanding of light and shadow. Unsigned. The portrait has been well presented in a handsome gilt-affect frame.
On canvas on stretchers.
Condition
The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some craquelure to the surface of the painting. The portrait has undergone previous restoration at some point with a reline and re-stretch of the canvas, and a small amount of overpainting to the front. The gilt-affect frame is in fine condition.
