Description
An early 19th century pastoral landscape depicting a shepherd tending their flock along a country lane. Gnarled, ancient trees line the route, arching gracefully on either side. The composition employs warm tones throughout, with the setting sun casting a gentle glow across the horizon whilst deep shadows gather beneath the foliage. Presented in a distressed gilt-effect frame with an ornate profile and shell and acanthus corner ornamentation. On panel.Condition
Signs of wear consistent with age. Light dirtying and discoloration to the varnish layer. Abrasion to the paint layer in the upper third (near centre). Signs of restoration and overpainting. A horizontal split to the lower third has been glued and wooden slats fixed verso to prevent further splitting to the panel. Light wear/patina to the ornate frame. Stable cracking and small moulding losses.
