A very fine and intricate early 19th Century watercolour portrait of a young lady, holding a rose in a garden setting. The sitter is evidently of considerable affluence, dressed elaborately in the latest fashion of the period, with a lace shawl, bonnet and dress. The artist has used many hundreds of delicate brush strokes in order to build layers and depth, as well as portray the realistic subtleties of character required in the art of portraiture. There is a gallery label to the reverse reading 'P. & D. Colnaghi and Co, 13 & 14 Pall Mall East, London', indicating a provenance at the established Colnaghi Art Gallery in St James's, Central London, known for being the oldest commercial art gallery in the world. Well-presented in an octagonal gilt-lined mount and glazed in a gilt-effect wooden frame. Unsigned and inscribed. On wove.
Condition
In very good condition for a picture of this age, with only some slight discolouration, and foxing to the lower edge. The mount has some surface marks in the upper right corner, and the lower left as shown. The frame has some scuffing to the corners.
