Description

A mother and her children play outside a rustic cottage in this idyllic watercolour dating from the early nineteenth, or possibly late eighteenth, century. The scene recalls the pastoral charm of George Morland, with a distant church set against rolling countryside, emphasising the moral virtue of rural life. Painted during a period of rapid industrialisation and significant change across the British countryside, works such as this celebrate the simplicity, harmony, and purity of rural life. Well presented in an antique gilt frame. Unsigned. On paper.

Condition

Signs of wear consistent with age, including discolouration and foxing to the paper. The paper has been laid to another sheet, painted in a red watercolour wash. Wear to the frame leaves it with a distressed finish.
