Description

A truly exceptional silkwork picture with painted facial details probably depicting the German Benedictine nun, Gertrude the Great, recognised by the Catholic church. The incredibly detailed surface stitching heightens the complex and rich tones. The craftsperson has used a knotting technique to convey the lush texture of foliage and give the composition depth of field. Well presented in an ornate gilt frame with beaded detail. Unsigned.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. There are some losses to the fragile material visible in the accompanying images. With some cracking to the frame which has been filled and retouched.
