Framed Early 19th Century Oil - Livestock at Rest

Description

An exquisite early 19th-century pastoral painting in the Dutch Italianate tradition. The composition shows livestock gathered around a thatched shed at the edge of a woodland. The composition opens to the right onto a sunlit landscape with a distant conical mountain, buildings, and a warm hazy sky. The work is beautifully presented in a gilt Empire frame with floral and acanthus motifs at the corners. Unsigned. On canvas.

Condition

The artwork exhibits signs of wear consistent with age. Fine craquelure is observed throughout the paint surface. Light surface discolouration is present, including yellowing to the varnish layer. Inspection under UV light reveals some previous restoration and retouching. The antique frame has minor surface wear, including small chips to the profile. Overall, the artwork presents in very good condition for its age.
