A charmingly quirky, English School oil in a naive style typical of the early 19th Century. The scene shows a traveler, sitting on the ground with his stick by his side, removing his shoe to dislodge a stone or other detritus. The jolly, red faced man has a strikingly red cap that contrasts wonderfully against the surprisingly vibrant blue sky.
The painting is presented in a truly exquisite French Rococo Revival frame from the early 19th Century. The original gilt has a beautiful glow and the ornamentation and strap work are wonderfully molded with excellent depth and lift. There is a canvas stamp at the reverse from the colourist and art supplier William Forward, which dates this painting circa 1840.
On canvas.The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. There is some craquelure to the surface and small areas of bitumen deterioration in the lower half. There is a small loss to the paint at the upper left edge. The frame has some areas of restoration to the molding and general tarnishing to the gilt.
