Framed 20th Century Oil - Portrait of a Gentleman Oyster Eater
Description
A late 19th/ early 20th century portrait of an unknown gentleman eating an oyster. This intriguing study is delicately painted, with great attention given to the facial features, and clothing. The dark tones used by the artist sets a mysterious and atmospheric scene, drawing the viewer in.
We have been unable to identify the sitter, however he appears to be an interesting character with his gold earing, large hat, gold tie pin and jacket with green lapels. Although today we consider oysters to be a luxurious item, during the 18th and 19th centuries they were cheap and mainly eaten by the working class. Which gives us a slight indication about his character and status.
Well presented in a flued gold effect frame.
Signed illegibly. On board.Condition
The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. A minor paint loss to the gentleman's cuff is visible (as seen in photos). Along with minor losses to the frame, at the lower corners and to the inner detailing. Finished with a shiny varnish.
