An interesting mid to late 19th century watercolour. The artist has depicted two Shakespearean characters Falstaff and Bardolph conversing on a road outside a large town. A line of marching soldiers can be seen walking up the road towards the characters. Falstaff is a fictional character who is mentioned in four plays by William Shakespeare and appears on stage in three of them.While Bardolph is a thief who forms part of the entourage of Sir John Falstaff. His grossly inflamed nose and constantly flushed.
This fine watercolour is well presented in a washline mount with gilt detail and a gilt mount. Label for Gale & Co. LTD to reverse.
Unsigned. On wove.The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration and very light foxing. Small marks to the frame. Overall in fine condition.
