A very fine Victorian nautical seascape depicting a two masted steamship. The steamship has been described as a major driver of the first wave of trade globalization (1870–1913) and contributor to an increase in international trade that was unprecedented in human history during the late Victorian period.
This fine oil would have been a fashionable piece of decor when first completed, the Victorians were fans of landscapes, portraits and nautical scenes, which they filled their parlour rooms with. Although we have no biographical information on the artist it is clear that they had some form of training and a keen eye for composition. They have depicted the ship steaming forward on calm waters, with considered and detailed brushstrokes.
Well presented in an ornate gilt effect composition frame.
Unsigned. On canvas on stretchers.The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration and craqueleur. There is some minor surface dirt and there are some very minor areas of overpainting to the upper edges of the canvas. The artwork has been finished with a light varnish. The frame has a few minor losses, namely to the inner beading work and the outer edges at the upper right hand side. However these have been partially restored by being overpainted. Generally the condition is very good for a painting of this age.
