Description

A charming 19th-century oil depicting a painter at work whilst his subjects pose in front of a fireplace. The artist captures the warm, intimate atmosphere of a rustic interior, with a glowing fireplace and rear window introducing subtle light into the scene. Unsigned. Well presented in a substantial gilt frame with a foliate running pattern and gilt slip. On canvas on stretchers.

Condition

The condition is typical for a painting of this age, including discolouration to the varnish and craquelure to the surface. The canvas has been relined. Some wear and small losses to the edge of the canvas. The frame shows signs of wear consistent with age, including stable cracking, craquelure and small losses, notably to the inner edge. Slight separation to the mitre joints. Loss to the lower right of the slip, as well as craquelure to the surface.
