A fine genre scene painted in the style of the 17th-century Dutch Golden Age. Three generations gather in a dimly lit kitchen, clustered around a swaddled infant before supper. Raking light falls across their faces while the background recedes into shadow. The artist beautifully captures the figures' 17th-century attire, as well as fresh produce and home furnishings. Well presented in an ornate gilt-effect frame with swept rails and shell and acanthus corner mouldings. Unsigned. On canvas on stretchers.
Condition
Fine craquelure observed throughout. Inspection under UV light reveals minor overpainting to the lower third. The canvas has been previously relined. The frame has minor surface wear. Overall, the artwork is in very good condition for its age.
