Framed 19th Century Oil - Chiaroscuro Still Life With Apples
Description
A 19th century still life depicting apples illuminated by candle light. The extreme contrast between light and dark in this piece creates an atmospheric and captivating scene. Although we have no biographical information on the artist, it is clear that they have an understanding of tone and composition, while the chiaroscuro style of the piece is clearly influenced by artists' such as Joseph Wright of Derby and the Flemish baroque style. The canvas is well presented in a thick ebonised wooden frame. Unsigned. On canvas on stretchers.Condition
The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration and areas of craquelure. There is a minor area of overpainting to the upper central area of the canvas, with a small restored indentation in this area, the three repairs to the canvas can be seen in the photo of the reverse. Slight widening to the joints of the frame, especially the upper left. Overall the condition is good. The canvas has been finished with a shiny varnish.
