Framed 19th Century Oil - A Rest Beneath the Tree

Description

A large nineteenth-century landscape depicting a man resting with his loyal dog beneath the shade of a tree, whilst a woman pauses on the path. He raises his hand, beckoning for her to come sit on the grass beside him. The work is beautifully presented in a vintage gilt frame with ornate running patterns and foliate corner ornamentation. Unsigned. On canvas on stretchers.

Condition

Overall the condition is good for a picture of this age. The artwork has undergone restorative work, including canvas tear repairs and areas of overpainting. Discolouration and craquelure to the paint layer. Faint impressions from the stretchers visible. Cracking and small losses to the frame, most notably to the inner edge of the lefthand side.
