A Fine English School, 18th century pastoral landscape depicting shepherds tending their flock of sheep and cattle in an open field. A duck pond graces the lower right corner, while figures go about their daily activities in the background. The shepherds appear to be giving the flock its summer shearing, while keeping watch over their energetic sheepdog in the lower left of the scene. The painting is well presented in a large gilt frame. Unsigned. (Provenance: Private Collection, North Dorset). On canvas on stretchers.
Condition
Signs of wear consistent with age. The canvas has been fully relined to the reverse. Inspection under UV light reveals areas of overpainting and restoration. Light wear to the gilt effect frame to include stable cracking to the various running patterns, small chips and scuffs to all rails.
