Two very fine watercolour studies with body colour depicting Braubach and Ghent. Both inscribed with the location to the lower corners. The first depicts Braubach, in Germany with women washing clothes on the banks of the river Rhine. Other figures hang large sheets from an ornately carved balcony above. All are dressed in traditional Germanic clothing, with large wicker baskets full of laundry. A sign above the door of the building reads 'Gasthaus', referring to a local inn or tavern.
The second watercolour depicts a busy street scene in Ghent, Belgium with the St. Bavo Cathedral dominating the skyline. There seems to have been a crash involving two coaches, hay and luggage are strewn across the road with figures milling about the expansive street.
Both watercolours are expertly painted with a delicate touch and include a great amount of detail, completed in a style which is instantly recognisable as Samuel Prout's. Prout was one of the masters of British watercolour architectural painting and secured the position of Painter in Watercolours to King George IV. John Ruskin, the eminent critic and artist, wrote in 1844, "Sometimes I tire of Turner, but never of Prout". Prout discovered his talent for architectural scenes during his first trip to the Continent, where he studied the quaint streets and market-places of continental cities, as did many other like-minded artists during the 19th century.
Both paintings are wonderfully presented in gilt frames with beading detail. On wove.
The condition is typical for pictures of this age including some discolouration foxing. Marks and minor losses to edges and corners of both frames (as seen in photos). Overall the condition is good.
