In the style of Richard Parkes Bonington (1802-1828), this romantic coastal scene depicts fishermen gathered on a shoreline overlooking choppy sea waters, with sails visible on the distant horizon. The work is rendered with particular attention to natural atmospheric light. Whilst the painting bears initials in the lower left, we do not believe these are by the artist's hand. The work is beautifully presented in an ornate Rococo Revival gilt frame adorned with scrolling acanthus and shell ornamentation. On canvas.
Condition
The artwork exhibits signs of wear consistent with age. Light surface discolouration throughout, including yellowing to the varnish layer. Inspection under UV light reveals some previous restoration/overpainting. The frame has minor surface wear, including small chips, scuffs, and stable cracking. Overall, the artwork presents in good condition.
