A charming late 19th century painting by a follower of the prolific Victorian watercolourist, Myles Birket Foster (1825-1899). In this endearing scene children are pictured together on the back of a makeshift sledge, pulled along by a patient ploughing horse. The children's mother and older brother can be seen entertaining the youngest on the back of the horse, while the girl's older sisters enjoy some peace to themselves. In the background a large flock of sheep can be seen grazing the grassy river banks on the right-hand side. The painting is inscribed in graphite to the reverse 'Myles Birket Foster'. On watercolour paper laid to card.
Condition
The condition is typical for a picture of this age including even surface discolouration. There is a small amount of damage to the corners of the watercolour, with a loss to the paper in the top right-hand corner.

Artist Biography
Myles Birket Foster RWS (1825-1899) was a British illustrator, watercolourist and engraver in the Victorian period. Foster exhibited over 400 works at the Old Watercolour Society of which he was elected a member in 1862.
