Folk Art Mid 19th Century Oil - Swiss Peasants
Description
A truly unique and engaging piece of European Folk Art from the mid 19th Century. This vibrant and crisp scene shows two smartly dressed peasants standing in an expansive, beautiful Swiss mountain landscape. The man wears lederhosen and is leaning on the barrel of his shotgun while the woman wears an extraordinarily red dirndl with crisp white puffed sleeves and apron. She is holding a wooden pale, resting on a tree trunk to her left. Both characters wear their straw hats at stylishly jaunty angles.
The softness and delicacy achieved in the skin tones and facial features of the man and woman, whilst retaining the quirky, flatness and simplicity typical of folk art of this era, is truly masterful. The colours have retained an astonishing vibrancy and the whole painting has been lovingly and skillfully re-lined and restored. The painting is unsigned and presented in a fine distressed wood frame.
On re-lined canvas.Condition
The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. Under some over painting and restoration, there is some craquelure. There are some losses down both sides, likely due to the frame having rubbed against he canvas. The frame has attractive aging and tarnishing.
