A fine original early or mid 19th Century English School oil, depicting horse riders with luggage in a rocky landscape. The dark setting creates an evocative mood, suggestive of the early morning or late dusk. The artist had a clear high level of proficiency in the medium, with an extremely layered palette adding depth and substance to the composition. Subtle light peaks through in the upper left, lighting the central two figures. A remarkable survival in a style typical of the period. Unsigned. On board.

In good condition overall, for a picture of this age. Inspection under UV light reveals some small areas of restoration. There are some losses to the corners of the work, and surface abrasions to the edges.
