Sulis Fine Art is proud to present this exquisite mid 19th century portrait of a gentleman. He is dressed in a fine black coat with a matching cravat and a crisp white collar. Judging by his dress we believe the portrait was painted c.1850. There is a small label to the reverse from art suppliers 'H. Jeffreys' of 92 Renshaw Street, Liverpool. The National Portrait Gallery has Jeffreys as a supplier from 1866 onwards. We presume the painting was taken to Jeffrey's store in the latter half of the 19th century for restoration work, possibly new stretchers for the canvas.
The portrait is excellently presented in a gilt effect frame with strapwork molding. H. Jeffrey's label fixed to the top stretcher bar. There is a graphite inscription to the centre of the canvas, but it is too faint to read. Also inscribed in yellow chalk 'B2' to the reverse upper edge.
The painting is unsigned.
On canvas on stretchers.The portrait is in a good condition. It has undergone thoughtful and precise restoration work. Four canvas tears have been repaired and overpainted, these are only visible to the reverse. The paint is stable and the surface very clean. Very minor scuffs to the corners of the frame. There is some craquelure to the surface.
