A simply exquisite work typifying the artistic and aesthetic ideals developing in the mid-19th Century, this fine original portrait of a lady in a red cloak has a delightfully momentary air of elegance. The sitter casts a reticent gaze downward, almost in repose, creating a reflective mood. Her delicate features match her equally understated jewellery, with a single earring capturing the light, and the viewer's eye. Wearing a trimmed deep scarlet hooded cloak, the sitter may be Spanish.
The artist's choice of palette is striking, and the contrast created between the vivid scarlet and the otherwise calm and naturalistic tones serves a dramatic purpose, reflecting the emotive position of the subject. With meticulous attention to detail, the work has a simplicity reminiscent of the Ruskinian school of artistic thought.
Handsomely presented in a gilt wood and composition frame, with pronounced centre and corner ornamentation, strapwork and acanthus scrolling, and a 19th Century gilt wooden oval slip, as shown. Inscribed on the canvas to the lower left, but below the oval mount, 'Louisa Pina'. This is shown in the final image. The canvas stamp to the reverse dates to the 1860's, and similar examples can be found in the Tate and the National Portrait Gallery.
Unsigned. On canvas on stretchers.In very good condition overall, especially for a picture of this age. There is even stable craquelure to the surface, and some light discolouration to the varnish. Inspection under UV light reveals a very small area of surface restoration to the forehead of the subject. The frame is very good, with some restoration to the inner oval wooden slip, and corners of the frame.
