Fine Late 19th Century Oil - Glory An Interior Scene

Sulis Fine Art is proud to present this extremely fine late 19th Century interior scene, entitled 'Glory'. A soldier is depicted, sitting on the edge of his bed, most likely in a place of rest and recuperation. His son plays longingly with his uniform buttons, while ladies converse near the doorway.

The intimate nature of this bedroom scene is enhanced by the light chiaroscuro employed by the artist, and is typical for the artistic traditions that had developed in the latter half of the 19th Century. Victorian attitudes to painting had changed by this time, due to the belief that the role of art should be to reflect the real world. This notion is evident here, and the subject of military sacrifice remains relevant to many.

Handsomely presented in a contemporary gilt wooden frame, with ornate floral strapwork corner mouldings, and arabesque running pattern with a plain gilt slip. Inscribed with the title 'Glory' to the lower edge of the slip, as shown.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some light discolouration. There is craquelure across the surface of the work, with areas of previous restoration to the upper left and along the lower edge. There are small losses to the paint near the lower edge, and some in-painting. There is also a patch repair to the canvas on the lower edge that has been restored, as can be seen from the reverse image. The frame has an area of restored moulding to the upper right corner, and other small paint losses and surface marks, as well as surface losses to the edges.
