A fine traditional early 19th Century English School portrait in oil, depicting a mother and child in a style typical of the period. Representative of the move from Romanticism to Realism, the artist has depicted a lady of undoubtedly good social standing with her young child, and the work has a loving maternal nature.
The sitter's detailed lace cap and blue ribbon is characteristic of 1830's England, as well as the cut of her dress and the breadth of the child's gown. Facing the viewer, this work is both arresting and intimate, with a sense of objectivity. In a period when sitting for one's portrait was 'all the rage', this work is a fine example of pre-Victorian artistic development. There is a partially faded canvas stamp to the reverse reading 'London'.
Unsigned. On canvas on stretchers.The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some surface yellowing and discolouration. There are several small areas of surface restoration, many historic and only visible under UV light. Some abrasions, mostly around the edges, and surface craquelure. Light creasing from the stretchers behind the canvas.
