Description
A gentleman examines a map at his desk in this late 18th or early 19th century portrait in oil. The artist has taken particular care with the map itself, alongside soft facial features and a friendly but commanding presence. Well presented in an antique Biedermeier wooden frame. Unsigned. On canvas on stretchers.Condition
The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration, surface dirt, and craquelure. Several abrasions to the surface, including a scratch across the hand. Inspection under UV light reveals no restoration. Marks and scuffs to the frame.
