A very fine and impressive 19th Century watercolour, depicting figures beneath a towering stone-built rural building. A gentleman in a feathered hat appears to be calling on a young, somewhat sheepish woman.
The vernacular architectural style, and dress of the figures suggests a Northern Continental setting, such as the Netherlands. Pots and jars lay strewn about in the yard, while the sky suggests a late afternoon or early evening hour. The artist has a fine command of the medium, with a demonstrable range in texture and light. Subtle shadowing and careful form complete this well-composed and handsomely detailed scene.
Well-presented in a gilt wooden frame with running mouldings, and clean card mount, as shown.
Unsigned. On wove.In very good condition overall, for a picture of this age. There is some even surface discolouration, and some light spot staining to the upper left and right edges. There is also a very small 2mm closed tear to the lower left side. The frame is in very good condition.
