Description

A distinguished 19th-century portrait of a proud captain, pictured in his naval uniform. His assured gaze meets the viewer with quiet authority, commanding attention and respect. In his hands, he holds a polished brass telescope. Every detail, from the precise tailoring of his coat to the subtle confidence in his stance, speaks to a life shaped by discipline and duty. Unsigned. Well presented in a substantial gilt frame. Acquired as a pair - the companion piece 'The Captain's Wife' is also for sale on our website (sk839). On canvas on stretchers.

Condition

Some discolouration to the varnish and ingrained dirt to the surface. Light abrasions and notable craquelure throughout. Small losses to the lower edge. Inspection under UV light reveals areas of overpainting throughout. The artwork has undergone previous restoration. Wear to the frame, including scuffs, chips to the edges and areas of light staining.
