Description

This fine nineteenth-century portrait depicts a young lady of high standing gently holding a soft pink rose. The artist has captured the subject in exquisite detail, with ruby jewels glittering against her fair skin and reminding the viewer of her status. Acquired as a pair, the companion piece is also listed on our website and depicts a young gentleman (sq912). Unsigned. Handsomely presented in a gilt frame. On canvas on stretchers.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age, including some discolouration to the varnish, ingrained dirt, and fine craquelure to the surface. Cracking noted around the perimeter. Slight slackening to the canvas. The frame shows signs of wear consistent with age, including scuffs, scratches, and chips along the edges. There is some separation to the mitre joints.
