The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. There is a crease to the lower right corner of the painting.

Painter, born in Stockton-on-Tees. She trained at Edinburgh College of Art and remained in that city for the rest of her life. She also studied for a single term at Glasgow School of Art as well as privately at the Stanhope Forbes School of Painting, Newlyn in 1910. In 1933 after having abandoned painting for many years, she began again, continuing until the 1970’s when her eyesight failed her. She exhibited at the Scottish Society of Women Artists, Royal Academy of Arts, Royal Scottish Academy, Society of Women Artists, Royal Institute of Oil Painters, Royal Society of British Artists and Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts. Examples of her work are to be found in Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum and Shipley Art Gallery, Gateshead. She was the mother of Elspeth Buchanan and the mother-in-law of artist Nicholas Horsfield.
