European School 18th Century Oil - Head Study of Socrates

This intimate portrait captures the enigmatic Greek philosopher Socrates deep in contemplation. The work is beautifully presented in a distressed gilt wood frame. Though unsigned, the piece bears the inscription 'Sokrates' on the reverse. On canvas.

Condition

Signs of wear consistent with age. Notable undulation to the canvas. Inspection under UV light reveals small areas of overpainting. Light dirtying and discolouration to the varnish layer. Craquelure to the surface. The gilt effect frame is in a distressed condition; however, this complements the antique portrait within.
