Etty Horton (1835-1905) - Late 19th Century Oil River Landscape with Church

Description

This very fine pastoral landscape is by the well-listed artist Etty Horton (1835-1905), and has been carefully composed, with lighter aspects of the scene to the left. This includes the river and coastline in the distance, and fairer skies. The darker contrast to the right of the frame produces a bucolic effect, a well-known trait of the artist in other scenes of the English countryside. Previous works have sold well at major auction houses in London, including Christie's and Bonham's, as well as internationally. Handsomely presented in a gilt frame with running leaf and berry moulding, acanthus strapwork and egg and dart beading, as shown. Signed. On canvas on stretchers.

Condition

In fine condition overall. There is some craquelure, and a very small hole in the canvas to the upper right quadrant. Inspection under UV light reveals no restoration. The frame has some cracking and discolouration expected for its age, and has been professionally restored.
