Ethel Sophia Cheeswright was a miniature painter who was born in Lambeth, London the daughter of a public notary. She was artistically schooled at Ladies College in Guernsey and remained there for almost all her adult life. She was elected a member of the Royal Society of Miniature Painters, Sculptors and Gravers and also showed at the Society of Women Artists. During World War II when the German army occupied the Channel Islands she was deported to Biberach an der Riss, in the state of Baden-Württemberg, Germany.
She was best-known for her watercolours depicting the coastline of Sark, which she painted from her studio at Rose Cottage. She also was an ardent worker for the Mission For Deep Sea Fishermen and had great respect for those who risked their lives at sea, and was herself a fisherman. After the War she returned to Sark she was still painting well into her early 80's despite failing eyesight. She passed away on November 30th 1977 aged 103. It should be noted that her surname is sometimes misspelt as 'Cheesewright' and her middle name as 'Sophy or Sophie'.
