This delightful scene depicts the city of Waidhofen an der Ybbs, Austria from the river. The charming city sits before a mountainous landscape. Pendl draws attention to the structural qualities of the buildings along the river's edge which are painted in fine detail. Signed to the lower right. Presented in original oak slip and ornate leaf and berry frame. Provenance stamp to the reverse reading 'Kais. Rat Eerta Ranschbury'. On wove.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. Some slight marking from restoration.

Artist Biography

Erwin Pendl (1875-1945) was an Austrian artist, illustrator and writer who specialized in architectural and veduta paintings. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and went on to work for architecture studios in the city. His model of inner Vienna can be found in the Wien Museum. During his career he produced many large scale studies of the Austrian capital that exhibited around the world.
