Artist Biography
Ernest Rocher was a Belgian figurative painter known for still lifes and landscapes, active mainly around 1925. Born in Vorst, he studied at the Brussels Academy under Jean Portaels. After inheriting money from his father, he built a house with a studio in Darwinstraat, where he lived and worked for life. Rocher began as a decorative painter for interiors before shifting entirely to canvas work after WWI. He was friends with artists like Paul Maas and Armand Massonet and a member of the art groups "Labor" and Cercle Artistique et Littéraire, regularly exhibiting in Brussels and other towns. His work ranged from landscapes—especially of the Ardennes, Brittany, and the Flemish coast—to later still lifes featuring flowers, fruit, and fine objects. Starting in an academic style, he later adopted Impressionist influences with a focus on light, though his work was seen as somewhat traditional for the time. In 1932, his art was exhibited in Riga, and some of his works are held in the Ostend Museum.
