Artist Biography

Ernest Procter was an English designer, painter and illustrator. An active member of the Newlyn School, he met his wife, the artist Dod Procter nee Shaw (1890-1972) while working under Stanhope Forbes and his wife Elizabeth Forbes. Both Ernest and Dod later attended the Academie Colarossi in Paris, where they married in 1912. He was a partner of the Harvey-Procter School, and taught drawing at the Glasgow School of Art from 1934 until the sad end of his life less than two years later.

Procter exhibited widely with his wife at the Fine Arts Society, the International Society of Sculptors, Painter and Gravers, the Royal Academy and the New English Art Club, where he became a member in 1929.

He produced many religious scenes for Cornish churches, notably to the parish church of St Hilary in Marazion and for St Mary the Virgin in Penzance. He painted allegorical subjects, figures and landscapes, including portraits and scenes of World War I. His work is in the Tate collection, the Royal Albert Hall, Imperial War Museum, Leeds Art Gallery and many others.
