A charming 19th Century oil painting by the artist Ernest Herman Ehlers (1858-1943), depicting a rural haymaking scene. Elmers has depicted the bucolic setting with a earthy colour palette and layered brushwork, portraying the scene wonderfully. The composition is well balanced, with the bridge centralised in the frame, alongside some minor details impressionistic in style, with considered application to set the agricultural scene. The artist also employs his delicate and skillful approach to reflection and shadow, evident in the flowing river beneath the bridge.
Elegantly presented in a substantial vintage distressed style gilt effect frame, as shown. Signed in the lower right hand corner.
Signed. On canvas on stretchers.There are some signs of restoration to the picture and the frame. There are three canvs repairs to the back of the picture, as shown in the images provided. The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration, some losses to the frame and very minor surface dirt.

Painter born in Newfoundland, Canada who while still a child came to Bristol with his widowed mother. Ehlers studied painting in Karlsruhe, Germany and returning to Britain resided for a time in Edinburgh. A fine landscape painter in the plein-air tradition his work was much influenced by the French Impressionists. He was the main protagonist in the formation the Bristol Savages in 1904 and he was elected the first President of that society during the first year. Ehlers was allegedly elected RWA in 1896 but their on-line archives have no record of this.
