Ernest Uden, (1911-1986) started his adult life as an undertaker's shop manager, later transitioning to become a commercial artist.
Uden studied at Aske's Hatcham College, New Cross, London, and went on to Camberwell and Goldsmiths' Schools of Art. During 1941-1945 he was an official artist with the National Fire Service, his resulting work being illustrated in 'War Pictures by British Artists' (1943). He went on to teach at Reigate School of Art and established himself as a successful artist, illustrator, and watercolour painter, being commissioned to produce work for a number of well-known companies, including British Gas, Daimler, Bass, Dunlop, Ferguson Tractors, ICI and the Radio Times. As a painter and commercial artist, he exhibited from the early 1930s from Bourne Grange Farm, Hadlow, Tonbridge, Kent, at the Royal Academy, Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour, New English Art Club, and abroad.
