Artist Biography
Ernest Alfred Sallis Benney, painter and designer, was born in Bradford. He studied at his local Bradford College of Art and later at the Royal College of Art. He was a well-known teacher and later became Principal of several art schools, including Cheltenham School of Art, Norwich School of Art, Hull School of Art and Brighton School of Art. He exhibited in London, at the RA, Royal Society of British Artists, Cooling Galleries, NEAC, ROI and elsewhere in the provinces. His work is in the collection of Brighton Museum & Art Gallery, Cheltenham Art Gallery, Victoria & Albert Museum, the Towner Art Gallery and Worthing Art Gallery. Benney was a member of the Chelsea Arts Club and was the father of the artist Derek Ward Sallis Benney and the grandfather of Paul Sallis Benney.
