Description
A dark and dramatic coastal scene in oil, in which a low golden sun breaks through heavy cloud. A shipwrecked vessel lies close to the shore on the left, its masts silhouetted against the sky, while a jagged headland rises on the right and two small figures stand watch at the water's edge, dwarfed by the weather around them. The handling is loose, giving the clouds and sea a restless quality, and the strong tonal shift between the bright centre and the shadowed edges lends the composition real depth. Newly framed, the work is unsigned. On panel.Condition
Inspection under UV light reveals areas of previous restoration. There are several small indentations in the painted panel. The frame is in very good condition.
