Description

An impressive nineteenth-century portrait of John Padbury, a carriage maker from Speenhamland, Berkshire. The sitter wears a medal on his lapel, which was awarded to him by the Duke of Norfolk in 1813 for the invention of a carriage-wheel guard, which keeps the wheel safely on the axis if the lynch pin comes out. Remarkably, the medal has remained with the portrait for over two hundred years, and will be sold with the portrait. The piece is well presented in an antique gilt frame. The frame is inscribed with the name of the artist "James Pollard" on the left-hand side, however this relates to a work previously in the frame and not the current portrait. Unsigned. On canvas on stretchers.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age, including some discolouration, surface dirt, and craquelure. The artwork has undergone some restoration, including two canvas tear repairs and areas of overpainting. Impressions from the stretchers. The frame has also undergone some restoration, most notably to the ornamentation on the corners. General wear and scuffs to the frame.
