A charming 18th-century portrait of a Georgian lady of evident social standing, rendered in the style of the period with a rose-coloured gown, pale décolletage and flushed cheeks. The lady has chosen to be captured alongside her loyal dog, with a gentle hand stroking its back as the animal looks up obediently. The portrait has been beautifully presented in an ornate gilt frame with swept rails and foliate and acanthus running patterns. Unsigned. On canvas.
Condition
Signs of wear consistent with age. The canvas has been previously relined. There is craquelure to the surface and minor paint loss to the lower third of the composition. Inspection under UV light reveals some minor retouching. Minor ornament losses to the frame on all sides, but otherwise in a stable condition with good patina.
