An fine and captivating watercolour painting with pen and ink details by the British artist Emmanuel Levy. The scene depicts a landscape view of mountains. The loose brush strokes and thoughtful colour palette allow for an engaging piece, illustrative of the artist's proficiency. Signed to the lower left-hand corner. Artist's name inscribed on the reverse. Well-presented in an off-white card mount and in an off-white painted wooden frame. On watercolour paper.

Condition

Painting in good condition overall, with minor discolouration and areas of slight surface creasing. Some Marks to the mount. Small scuffs, surface dirt and some areas of paint loss to the frame.

Artist Biography

Emmanuel Levy (1900-1986) was a painter born in Manchester. Levy studied at Manchester School of Art under Adolphe Valette and in London and Paris. He held his first solo exhibition at Manchester City Art Gallery in 1924 and afterwards exhibited regularly, holding a retrospective at Salford City Art Gallery, 1948. Keen on giving public demonstrations in portrait painting, Levy also acted as art critic for Manchester City News and Evening News. Levy taught at Battersea Polytechnic School of Art, and during the 1950’s and 60’s he taught at Stockport College of Art and in Manchester. He then became a member of the Manchester Society of Modern Painters. His work is in the collections of the NPG, Ben Uri Gallery, Leeds University Collection, Salford Art Gallery, Stockport Art Gallery and Manchester City Art Gallery.
