Elmer Keene - Original Late 19th Century Charcoal Drawing. Pastel on paper. Part of a collection of pastel drawings of night-time scenes, some of which are stamped on verso with "Made in France. Expositions Universelles 1855-1900. Medaille de Bronze. Papiers, Cartes, Toiles, Anti-Ponce pour le Pastel. Pl. Eq. Paris. Marques Deposee." These stamps relate to prizes awarded to the paper manufacturer at the nineteenth-century Paris Exhibitions. Inscribed. Condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. Some stains to lower right corner as shown. Drawing has a more brown muted tone than shown in photograph.

Ezra ‘Elmer’ Keene was born in Nottinghamshire in 1853 to a Quaker family. During the 1870s he switched from being a miller and baker to being an artist and photographer. Elmer married a Yorkshire girl Eliza Darlow and they had 11 children, four of whom became artists. The family moved to Leicester in 1901; Elmer died there in 1929. He was known for producing a lot of card-friendly work in coastal and rural places, often moonlight scenes.
